Professor Jaber F. Gubrium awarded an Honorary Doctorate

The School of Social Work and the Department of Sociology have nominated Professor Jaber F. Gubrium for an honorary doctorate at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Lund University.

”I am very pleased to receive this honour. It not only reflects the significance of the research on which it is based, but also the important contributions of the many prominent social science scholars at Lund and throughout the Nordic countries who have collaborated with me. The books and articles stemming from research on the everyday construction of social problems and its human service mediations have been well-received internationally. The related work and publications of Lund colleagues Tove Harnett, Katarina Jacobsson, and Håkan Jönson in Social Work and David Wästerfors and Malin Åkerström in sociology have been much appreciated for their insight and scientific value”, says Jaber F. Gubrium, who is a sociologist and a professor at the University of Missouri, Department of Sociology.

Gubrium’s research focuses on social identities, social institutions and social problems. He has researched and developed theories in relation to physical rehabilitation, psychiatry, families and family therapy, self-help groups, eldercare, institutional care for children and youth with behavioural problems. He has published numerous books, articles and anthologies. His works on methodological issues have been widely used on undergraduate, advanced and PhD courses in Lund.

Gubrium’s research is characterised by theoretical and methodological innovation and development. He has contributed to new research approaches in qualitative interview methods, narrative analysis, narrative ethnography and discourse analysis. He has also contributed to discussions on sociology of knowledge with significant international impact.

Gubrium was active as a visiting professor at the Department of Sociology at Lund University for a month in 1997, and for many years he has collaborated closely with researchers from the Faculty of Social Sciences at Lund University. This relationship continues to this day. He has e.g. made research visits, as well as contributions to seminars and conferences that successively have resulted in several new publications.

Gubrium will visit Lund on the 2nd of June 2017 in connection with the Honorary Doctorate ceremony taking place. During the same period he will also participate in events at the School of Social Work.
