A brief interview with Carolin Schütze

This fall PhD candidate Carolin Schütze is a visiting scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

What have you been working on since you got there?

I recently gave a presentation about migration in the Swedish welfare state and discussed a new working paper, which is part of my dissertation project. The paper focuses on the role of attitudes towards migrants in the practical welfare work (more specifically in Försäkringskassan and Arbetsförmedlingen) and investigates this issue with help of survey data.

Are there any differences discussing these issues in an American context?

Overall there is a great interest to learn more about migration in Sweden. I briefly explained 'the Nordic model' and discussed the political climate in Sweden after the so called 'Migration Crisis' and how this is important to take into consideration when talking about welfare work and migration in Sweden.

Carolin is currently working on a paper together with Assistant Professor Mosi Ifatunji, who is also her faculty sponsor at the Sociology department. The department at UNC is one of the top departments in the country.
