Report from a Minor Field Study

In the spring of 2015 Lisa Hindström and Aleksandra Goreczna wrote their bachelor thesis about sex education in Grenada, after receiving an MFS scholarship for field studies. This is the report from their travels.

Grenada
When we decided to apply for a Minor Field Studies scholarship from The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, we were both abroad on international placements in different parts of the world: Aleksandra in Canada and Lisa in Azerbaijan. During the placement semester abroad, we bcame aware of how important it is to work with gender equality issues. The insight into how social work is organized in other parts of the world also contributed to an urge to to travel again and leave the safe confines of Skåne. Despite the 12 hour time difference between Canada and Azerbaijan we managed to compile an application and were granted an MFS scholarship to carry out a field study on the island of Grenada in the Caribbean.

Our BA thesis came to be about what moral and rights-based assumptions can be discerned in sex education in Grenada, and what consequences this may have for equality.  The trip gave us 10 unforgettable weeks in the Caribbean, many memories and tremendous insight into how multifaceted social work can be. To live in another country for and to experience a different culture was incredibly exciting and instructive. It was not easy at first, but curiosity and persistence helped us enjoy the excitement of the country one hundred percent. We fell in lovein love with Granada, its beaches and the Caribbean way of life. Getting to know new people and be exposed to a, for us, totally new culture has given us so much joy and made us rich in experience. We also got to know each other in a whole new way, but perhaps most of all we got to know ourselves. We can not encourage anyone enough to apply for an MFS and take the opportunity to write a thesis and spend time in another part of the world!
