Researchers present in Italy

On October 29, Anna Meeuwisse and Roberto Scaramuzzino were in Rome to present the results of a survey of Italian social workers. The survey originated in a project run at the School of Social Work between 2005 and 2008: 'Municipal individually-oriented social work in four Nordic capital areas' (FAS 2005-2008).

The questionnaire is about social workers' workers' conditions, about their views on social policy and social work in their own country and their views on poverty and its causes. After, in collaboration with the University of Helsinki, having been conducted in Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway, the survey was replicated in Italy with the help of the the organization Consiglio Nazionale Ordine degli assistenti sociali (CNOAS that organizes social worker in Italy) and the University of Genoa in 2012.

Meeuwisse and Scaramuzzino were invited by the Italian Government, specifically the Ministry for Family Policy. In addition to several invited politicians, representatives of trade unions, the professions, and the voluntary sector were also present. The presentation gained attention in Italian media, including a segmnt in one of the largest news shows (TG1). What attracted attention was, for instance, that despite the fact that social workers play a crucial role in the welfare system and the implementation of social policies, they are rarely heard in terms of changes in welfare.

Meeuwisse and Scaramuzzino will continue to work with this material and a report (in Italian) will be issued by CNOAS spring.
