Care for the elderly – conditions and everyday realities

The research group has been active at the School of Social Work in Lund since 1993 and is currently headed by Professor Håkan Jönson. The group was initially launched by Professor Rosmari Eliasson-Lappalainen as part of the FORTE-funded research program “Care for the elderly – conditions and everyday realities”. Several of the Ph.D-candidates that finished their dissertations within the framework of the program are active in the group and new Ph.D-candidates and postdoctoral researchers have joined as members of what today could be described as a research environment, open to researchers who are interested in eldercare. The research group acknowledges that the complex reality of eldercare needs to be studied with a variety of methodologies and approaches, focussing structural, interpersonal and personal aspects and taking into account the perspectives of those who receive care and those who provide care.

The main activity of the research group is to arrange seminars where members and invited researchers discuss texts – article manuscripts, chapters, applications, conference presentations. An important role of the group is to act as a supportive environment for Ph.D-candidates during their entire education, that includes the opportunity to discuss research ideas, plans for empirical studies, chapters, articles and entire manuscripts for dissertations.

Research themes
Members of the group conduct research within project that concern different aspects of the ageing process and the everyday activities and conditions of eldercare. Research of members concerns:

  • Welfare models, organization and practices in eldercare
  • Ageism, social inequalities and the construction of old age
  • Power relations, interaction and identity in eldercare
  • Ageing and disability
  • Death and palliative care
  • Gender and ethnicity in eldercare
  • Health and housing of older people
  • Pensions and care planning of individuals

Although several members of the research group have been or are Ph.D-candidates at the School of Social Work, the group has broadened its basis and includes researchers from Denmark and from other universities in Sweden. Since several years the group has a close collaboration to the FORTE-funded Centre for Ageing and Supportive Environments and several researchers belong to both environments.
